What is Kefir?

Lactose Intolerant?
This is not a problem if lactose happens to not sit nicely in your tummy. Like yogurt, kefir can be made with either milk or other type of liquids. The following the two types of Kefir:

  • Milk Kefir
The most popular, and safe to say, the most traditional type of either kefir or yogurt. To make milk kefir, you must use a milk kefir starter or grain. You can use fresh cow's, goat's or sheep's milk to make this drink. Some people also use full-fat UHT milk or add milk powder on their batch. The advantage: milk contains calcium that is good for the bones and quality protein that helps build muscles and is essential for recovery for those who are seriously training for fitness or sports.
For vegetarians and vegans, coconut milk, other nut kinds of milk like almond milk, and soy milk can be used as well.

    Milk Kefir
  • Water Kefir
Water kefir is made using a water kefir grain. The types of liquid that you can use to make this drink can be any of the following: water, coconut water, and your choice of fruit juices. Water Kefir is perfect for people who have problems with lactose. Although water kefir has lesser strains of bacteria compared to milk kefir, it still has more compared to other fermented food products such as yogurt and buttermilk. Water kefir is also popular with kids as you can make this health drink more fun with the variety of fruit juices that you can use that also adds a sweet taste to it, which, kids and adults alike love.Coconut Juice Kefir

Whatever your taste or preference, you can enjoy the many benefits this health drink is offering with the types that are available. All we can say is -- enjoy your kefir!
